Dronabinol: what is it?
Dronabinol is the name for the active ingredient Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) found in cannabis, which exists as a colorless to amber-colored, solid resin at room temperature. In Germany, dronabinol formulations have been available on the market and on prescription since 1998, making it one of the established cannabinoid-based medicines used primarily in pain management.
Dronabinol prescriptions are prepared individually for the patient in the pharmacy and thus enable a dosage and application adapted to the individual patient.
Most commonly, dronabinol is prescribed as an oily solution or drops or in the form of capsules for oral administration, but inhalation of an alcoholic solution using a vaporizer is also possible. Within the framework of the Cannabis Act (§ 31 SGB V paragraph 6), patients can apply for cost coverage for dronabinol from their health insurance company.
When is dronabinol prescribed?
In addition to its use for chronic and neuropathic pain, dronabinol is also prescribed for the treatment of numerous other chronic conditions and symptoms. These include, but are not limited to.
- Multiple sclerosis spasticity,
- chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting
- or weight loss.
This broad spectrum of indications is based on THC’s effect on the body’s endocannabinoid system, which regulates many important processes such as pain perception, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal as well as hepatic processes.
